ESTA Technical Standards
Program
BSR E1.22 Entertainment Technology
- Fire Safety Curtain Systems
Scheu
Consulting Services is an active participant in ESTA’s Technical Standards Program and serves on the Rigging Standards Working Group.
We are involved in the creation of a standard for Fire Safety Curtains to be
used as a basis for future model building codes.
The latest draft of BSR E1.22 is currently out for public review. The public review
materials are available at http://www.esta.org/tsp/documents/public_review_docs.php or by writing to mailto:standards@esta.org. The review runs
through March 28, 2006.
At LDI in November, the task group held a session entitled
Fire Safety Curtains: What are they for,
anyway? Scheduled for Friday November 11, 2005,
4:00pm-5:30pm, this was an opportunity to find out what
issues are being addressed by members of the Rigging Working Group writing a
new ANSI standard for fire safety curtains. These are safety devices with a
long tradition in theatres, but there are divergent views how they work or
should work in a fire to enhance safety.
Moderator:, Harvey Sweet,
LA ProPoint - ESTA E1.22 Task Group Chair.
Panelists: William Conner, Bill Conner Associates; Dan Culhane, SECOA; Peter
Scheu, Scheu Consulting Services; Road Kaiser, JR Clancy, Inc.; Richard
Nix, Performance Systems Integration
At the 2003 LDI Conference in
Orlando, FL, we joined our colleagues for a comprehensive open panel
discussion on Fire Curtains.
Sponsored
by ESTA, the session was entitled “Fire Safety Curtains: More than Decoration or It’s Curtains for You!” and explored the current efforts
to create ANSI standards for fire safety curtains. What are fire
safety curtains and what is their intended purpose? What is the ESTA
Technical Standards Program doing to help ensure that fire safety curtain
systems, when required, perform as intended?
BSR E1.22,
Entertainment Technology - Fire Safety Curtain Systems, under development by
the ESTA Fire Safety Curtain Task Group, was explained and reviewed by
members of the Task Group. Panelists offered insight into the process of
encouraging the reference and adoption of this ANSI standard when it is complete.
Moderator: William Conner, Schuler & Shook, ESTA E1.22 Task Group
Chair.
Panelists: Robin Crews, WJH&W; Dan Culhane,
Secoa; Randy Davidson, Risk International &
Associates; Ted Paget Jones & Phillips
Associates; Peter Scheu, Scheu
